Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical Inc. (NASDAQ:RARE) is a good long-term biotech to own in my opinion. That’s because it has already been able to receive regulatory approvals for several of its drugs in its pipeline. Matter of fact, the drugs being sold by the company are Crysvita and Dojolvi. In Q1 of 2024, it generated $109 million in total revenue, which was an 8% growth year-over-year. As such, if sales continue like this, it will continue to build shareholder value. If this is the case, then why do I believe it is important to take a look at this biotech now? It…

American households want the biggest bang for their buck right now when they pull their wallets out to shop. That doesn’t mean they want something cheap all the time. They’ve been paying more for goods and services for a while because of higher inflation that stubbornly stuck around. What’s also occurred concurrently is that higher interest rates have made it more expensive for shoppers to borrow money – on credit cards for example – for buying things or paying off necessities such as monthly bills. But even as consumers push through these pressures, they’re still shopping, and seeking deals. Bargain…

After receiving a graduate degree, Julianna Larock was bombarded with news about the powerful labor market and how much demand there was for skilled workers. But that wasn’t her reality.Instead, she spent untold hours browsing through networking sites such as LinkedIn, attending mixers and other professional events, and generally scouring the collective workplace for something that would fit her desire to land a job in the world of finance. All to no avail.”Quite honestly, it was pretty brutal,” says Larock, 25, a Wilmington, Delaware, native now living in New York City. “It felt like a lot of work for little response,…

While inflation is showing signs of easing, consumers in the country may still be feeling its effects for quite some time, according to Joel Anderson, CEO of discount retailer Five Below. The executive sees underperformance particularly in the lower-income demographic.”The lower-end customer is really being stretched,” Anderson said on an earnings call with analysts Wednesday. “We’ve got to deliver value, and we’ve got to really display that in how we go to market, and when you walk in the store, what you see. But all that’s in flight right now, and [we] expect to see some of those changes improve…

There’s been much ado about federal student loan forgiveness with little relief directed to students holding private student debt. However, a little-known program directed by private student loan lender Navient is forgiving private loans for borrowers seeking relief on the grounds that their school lied to them. The Project on Predatory Student Lending (PPSL) launched a campaign to raise awareness of the servicer’s “School Misconduct Discharge Application.” The application gives borrowers who experienced misconduct at their school the right to apply directly for discharge of private loans, marking a long-overdue recognition of borrower rights, PPSL said.  In January 2022, Navient entered…

We all know the population of older adults is growing rapidly. But we are aging in very different ways. And if we are going to reimagine medicine, caregiving, and government policy, it is important to better understand who older adults are and how they live. In its newest Profile of Older Americans, the federal Administration for Community Living paints a detailed picture of the lives of US residents age 65 or older. In some ways, this snapshot, which focuses mostly on older adults in 2022, tells a tale of extremes. The headline, of course, is the continued rapid growth of…

LUMN stock: quant ratings are so negative for good reasons About a year ago, I wrote a few articles on Lumen Technologies (NYSE:LUMN) stock (see the chart below) to caution potential investors about the dangers lurking behind the cheap valuation and high yield. At that time, the stock was trading around $1.80 per share and an FY1 P/E of 4.6x. Despite such beaten down prices and valuation ratios, my top concerns at that time were twofold: I am concerned about LUMN’s outlook for both the top and bottom lines ahead. LUMN is suffering from a high leverage ratio and structural…
