A janitorial company has been fined $649,000 after an investigation found it hired minors for dangerous jobs cleaning slaughterhouses, the United States Department of Labor said Monday. Fayette Janitorial Service had employed at least 24 children, including those as young as 13, according to the DOL investigation. The minors had been working overnight shifts at two separate slaughter facilities, according to the DOL. Federal labor law bans children from certain jobs in slaughtering and meat packaging plants, including using or cleaning machinery, due to the hazardous conditions. In addition to paying the fine, Fayette must hire a third party to…
There’s mounting evidence of how serious Apple is about artificial intelligence, Jim Cramer said Tuesday, pointing to a Wall Street Journal report about the tech giant developing AI data center chips. “This is a very good sign,” Jim said. “This is the beginning of what I regard as the Apple offense on AI.” He also reiterated his Apple stock mantra: “Own it, don’t trade it.” According to the Journal , the project known as Apple Chips in Data Centers, or ACDC internally, has been in the works for years but does not have a definitive timeline. The report also said…
Altimeter Capital Chair and CEO Brad Gerstner said he has taken some chips off the table after this year’s strong run in technology stocks, but he is still bullish on the names that are reaccelerating because of artificial intelligence. “All of these stocks are up a lot just to start this year and the backdrop has gotten a little worse,” Gerstner said on CNBC’s ” Halftime Report ” on Tuesday. “If you want to take a little bit off the table today, just reflecting on the fact that you’ve achieved a year’s worth of returns in the first few months of…
The Federal Reserve said that a lack of progress in bringing inflation down over the last few months is why it is holding interest rates where they are for now. On Wednesday, the central bank announced it would maintain the federal funds rate range at 5.25% to 5.5%, where rates have held steady since July. Fed officials have said in past meetings that they anticipated rate cuts for 2024 but need more confidence that inflation is heading toward the 2% target rate. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated this sentiment on Wednesday when speaking with reporters and said it would likely take longer…
The subject of financial exploitation of elders in our country has been on law enforcement radar for decades. Significant public education programs on this topic by states, counties, and elder-focused organizations are ongoing, but are they doing any good? There was an increase in financial elder exploitation by 14% over the last year, according to the annual FBI report. The data reveals the number of crime reports by persons over 60 in the U.S. Could that include your own aging parents or other loved ones? According to the report, “tech support scams were the most widely reported kind of elder…
The US State Department on Monday plans to release an ambitious new cybersecurity strategy that seeks to curb Russia and China’s digital influence in the developing world and blunt those countries’ alleged efforts to interfere in elections. With roughly half of the world’s population holding elections in 2024, their vulnerability to “cyber-enabled interference” is “particularly acute” and requires the US to continuously expose hackers and propagandists trying to undermine confidence in democracies, says the strategy, which CNN has reviewed. “We have communicated and will continue to communicate to Russia and to China that we view interference in our democratic processes…

After a brutal 2022/early 2023, Google stock (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has been on a tear. It was only last February that Google’s AI tool Bard gave a wrong answer in a presentation, sending the company’s market cap down $100 billion in one day. Panicked analysts proclaimed the end of Google, and fund managers dumped the stock. But since then, business has never been better, with GOOG now up roughly 77% from that fateful Bard presentation. Last month, Google soared after delivering a huge earnings beat, driven by YouTube and search. Google also just did something that I thought was incredibly savvy,…
