When a spouse or life partner dies, it’s only natural that the survivor will be grieving and lonely. To add injury to insult, the survivor usually also experiences a money crunch. And the odds are the survivor will be a woman in her 80s or 90s, when she’ll be less resilient to deal with the challenges. Like all retirement planning challenges, you’ll do better with a plan! Let’s take a look. What Is The Retired Widow’s Money Crunch? The financial challenge for survivors is that their retirement income usually drops significantly after one spouse or partner passes away, yet most…
President Joe Biden went on “The Howard Stern Show” on Friday and repeated his familiar story about the time he supposedly “got arrested” trying to defend the civil rights of Black Americans. As in the past, Biden told the story on Friday while recounting what his mother supposedly said while urging him to accept Barack Obama’s 2008 offer to be his running mate. His mom, he said, did not want him to turn down a man who was vying to become the first Black president. Biden told Stern: “She said, ‘Joey, let me — remember’ — true story, she said — ‘Remember when…
Joe Biden was at a fundraiser for his re-election bid on Thursday evening in the suburbs north of New York City when he made a fleeting reference to the criminal cases facing his rival Donald Trump. “I haven’t had a chance to watch the court proceedings,” Biden said after an introduction by actor Michael Douglas. “Because I’ve been campaigning.” Biden’s comment captured the bizarre split-screen spectacle that is currently dominating this year’s presidential election — and one that could present an opening for the president to seize the initiative. On one side of the screen, Biden is running a traditional re-election campaign as…
Introduction Economic data releases have shaken up investors this month, with the major US indices all down for the month. Data by YCharts Particularly hit was the NASDAQ-100, an index widely considered analogous to the US tech sector, with a 1-month drawdown of 7.10%. This falls in line with changes in several of the key economic data points. First, I like to look at the “big three” metrics, or what I like to call the “usual suspects.” The Usual Suspects These three indicators, inflation, gross domestic product, and unemployment, are some of the most reported-on economic stats and dominate media…

As pro-Palestinian protests sweep campus, student journalists are rushing to the big story and exams
Arianna Smith is juggling a lot right now. Smith is editor-in-chief of The Lantern, Ohio State University’s student-run newspaper, which has scrambled in recent days to cover pro-Palestinian protests roiling the campus. It’s also finals week, and in the coming days the newspaper’s staff will transition to the next year’s staff. But the news doesn’t account for exams. “We have had reporters and editors drop everything they are doing [to cover the story], even though they have finals that they should be studying for,” Smith told CNN. As universities across the country crack down on demonstrations over Israel’s military actions in Gaza and police arrest hundreds of…

A week ago, Nvidia suffered its third-worst session on record, plunging 10%, in a broader wreckage for artificial intelligence stocks. Those losses have now been completely erased and then some – and not because of anything the AI chip king has said or done. Nvidia’s gains of 4.35% and 3.65% on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, were likely fueled by dip buying, as investors sought to capitalize on last Friday’s carnage. The bounceback was briefly interrupted during Wednesday’s regular session – before Meta Platforms ‘ earnings report that evening reminded Wall Street just how much money is being spent on AI…
