John Bogle once said index funds would never compromise more than half of the total mutual fund market. That was years ago. Morningstar MORN recently reported the total value of passively managed funds has surpassed actively managed mutual fund assets. Some are expecting index funds to top 70% of total mutual fund assets within the decade. How much can the market share of these investment products grow? What happens to capital markets if that number hits 100%? More important, how might this put your retirement savings at risk? By Gergely Szakacs (Reuters) – Underlying inflation in central, eastern and southeastern Europe is stronger than in advanced economies, requiring many central banks in the region to maintain a tight monetary stance for longer than the European Central Bank, a top IMF official said. Aided by a retreat in price growth from double digits, some central banks in the region have started lowering interest rates, led by Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic, with Romania’s central bank holding off on rate easing for now. “The decline of the inflation rate is progressing more slowly in Romania, Moldova, Montenegro, Hungary, and…
By Nyasha Chingono HARARE (Reuters) – Zimbabwe needs to make its fiscal and monetary policy more predictable to instil confidence in its depreciating currency, a senior World Bank official said on Friday. It could make progress by moving away from the central bank’s “quasi-fiscal operations”, Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank’s Regional Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa, told Reuters in an interview. She did not spell out what those operations were, but the International Monetary Fund said last month the central bank should reduce its non-core activities, which have included printing money and borrowing to lend to the government.…
Investing.com — OPEC and its oil-producing allies’ decision to extend production cuts may provide a short term boost to oil prices, but oil supply is still expected to outpace demand in the second quarter as crude demand remains subdued and U.S.-led non-OPEC supply continues to rise. “[T]he cut extension would still leave our global S&D balance in surplus in Q2,” Macquarie said in a note, adding that the 2.2 million barrels per day of cuts delivered so far have shown “little effect” on aggregate OPEC supply. Russia and Saudi Arabia, who lead the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies,…
