The last time Taiwan’s president met a US House Speaker, China launched unprecedented military drills, simulating a complete attack on the island from missile bombardment to amphibious invasion. But after President Tsai Ing-wen met Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California last week, China’s military response was more narrowly defined. The People’s Liberation Army mainly practised preventing Washington and its allies from coming to Taipei’s rescue if Beijing did attack the country.“This time, there was a big focus on anti-access and area denial,” said a senior Taiwanese government official, referring to a strategy of blocking US forces from entering and operating in airspace…

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has signed a sweeping bill imposing a minimum age limit for social media usage, in the latest example of states taking more aggressive steps intended to protect teens online. But even as Sanders signed the bill into law on Wednesday afternoon, the legislation appeared to contain vast loopholes and exemptions benefiting companies that lobbied on the bill and raising questions about how much of the industry it truly covers. The legislation, known as the Social Media Safety Act and taking effect in September, is aimed at giving parents more control over their kids’ social media…

The U.S. Postal Service proposed raising the price of first-class mail stamps from 63 to 66 cents this week, the second price hike so far this year. Stamp prices have nearly doubled over the past two decades, increasing from just 37 cents in 2002. USPS most recently upped prices from 60 cents to 63 cents in January. If the proposed hike to 66 cents is approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission, then it will take effect in July. “As operating expenses fueled by inflation continue to rise and the effects of a previously defective pricing model are still being felt, these…
One would be hard pressed to find any market in East Asia except the Philippines where startups are major digital banking players. In one jurisdiction after the next, regulators have ensured that incumbent lenders and in some cases large technology companies win the requisite licenses to operate online-only banks. After biding its time on digital banking for several years, Thailand is following in its neighbors’ footsteps, setting capitalization requirements and other hurdles that will likely eliminate scrappy upstarts from the application process. In its own words, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) requires that “major shareholders of the virtual bank must…
By Christian Kraemer and David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Group of Seven (G7) finance leaders pledged on Wednesday to take action to maintain the stability of the global financial system after recent banking turmoil and to give low- and middle-income countries a bigger role in diversifying supply chains to make them more resilient. Their communique did not mention China by name, but the supply chain language fit in with “friend-shoring” efforts by industrial democracies to work with each other to become less reliant on the Asian manufacturing powerhouse for battery minerals, semiconductors and other strategic goods. “We commit to jointly empowering…
© Reuters. (Reuters) – The judge overseeing the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems on Wednesday sanctioned Fox News, handing the ballot-machine company a fresh chance to gather evidence after Fox withheld records until the eve of trial, a person present during Wednesday’s court hearing said. Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis said he would also very likely tap an outside investigator to probe Fox’s late disclosure of the evidence and take whatever steps necessary to remedy the situation, which he described as troubling, the person said. It was not immediately clear whether Dominion would seek new depositions.…
