One of the most common emotions connected with money isn’t excitement, fear or even uncertainty. It’s ‘shame.’ This shame around money can cause deep havoc to the financial wellbeing because it’s often mixed with another common theme for American savers: A lack of financial education and knowledge. Both of these realities – lack of financial education and the shame around finances – work in tandem to derail goals, drive higher debts and reduce the potential for long-term security. Yet, in the U.S., financial literacy isn’t improving – and may be getting slightly worse. According to the annual P-Fin Index conducted…
The French far-right leader Marine Le Pen and party chief Jordan Bardella wore broad smiles as they pitched their “ticket” to voters with a view to taking power in 2027 — with her as president and him as prime minister. Using the original English word, the official unveiling of their duo in January was a new move in the context of French politics, where the president is elected directly and the post holds powerful institutional functions. Prime ministers are named afterwards to run the government and often sacrificed when presidents need to reboot in a crisis. The announcement in a joint interview…

(6:40) The following is an abridged transcript: Independence Day will mean low volume and a largely quiet week for Wall Street. But there will be some fireworks on Friday as well as Thursday for Fed nerds like me (while I’m not watching fellow colonials New Zealand take on England in cricket with the great commentary of Franke MacKay.) The stock and bond markets will close early on…

One year ago, the rate on the 15-year fixed note averaged 6.18%. Read the full article…
Since I have been a Roger Federer fan for decades, I was eager to watch the new documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days. We get to watch Federer from the time he announces his retirement until he plays his final match at the Laver Cup. What we witness is how difficult it is for him to let go of his calling and identity for most of his life. Nike stock crashed almost 20% after the company reported solid results for Q4 FY 2024, but offered weaker than expected guidance: The world’s leading sports apparel and footwear company said that it expects sales for FY 2025 to be down by about mid single digit. On a long-term basis, however, I think the sell-off creates an attractive opportunity for investors to buy a high quality franchise at bargain prices. In my view, Nike is poised to remain a winner in the sports industry, due to unparalleled brand strength, global market presence, and a best-in-class athlete endorsement strategy. As a function…

When you receive Social Security retirement benefits while working, you could run into one of the more complicated and confusing rules, the Social Security earned income limit, or earnings test. The rule exists because Congress historically discouraged people from working while receiving Social Security benefits. You can receive Social Security retirement benefits anytime beginning at age 62 without regard to whether you are retired. But at certain ages, if you’re receiving retirement benefits and your earnings exceed a limit, your retirement benefits will be reduced. Most people believe you lose Social Security benefits in those cases, but that’s not really…
