Heathrow is the world’s second-busiest international airport behind Dubai, according to travel data group OAG. It handles 1,300 take-offs and landings each day.
Nearly 100 flights have been cancelled and about 120 flights due to arrive at Heathrow are being diverted, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24. Incoming aircraft are being redirected to nearby airports including London’s Gatwick and Stansted, Birmingham, Paris’s Charles de Gaulle, Helsinki and Shannon in Ireland. The closure will affect at least 1,351 flights, it added.
Arrivals were “regulated at Zero due to power outage in the airport”, according to an announcement on the operations portal of Eurocontrol, which manages air traffic operations and control across Europe.
London-Heathrow will be closed for ALL of Friday due to a “significant power outage” caused by a fire in an electrical substation.
There are currently 120 aircraft in the air that will be diverting to alternate airports or returning to their origins. https://t.co/TEHf2kJO23 pic.twitter.com/Lot0lsJLz8
