Space Solar and Thales Alenia Space are teaming up to work on a commercial space-based solar power system, a move toward distributing renewable energy from space to Earth.
The companies said Monday that the new partnership builds on an existing collaboration in the context of a U.K. government innovation program. Both companies are committed to bringing to life the technology needed to deliver space-based solar power, they said.
Thales Alenia Space–a joint venture between France’s Thales and Italy’s Leonardo–is also leading a feasibility study for the European Space Agency to assess the viability of spaceborne solar power plants, aiming to make an decision by 2025 on a program for commercialization, it said.
